International Day of Persons with Disabilities, 3 December 2012

Theme:  Removing Barriers to Create an Inclusive and Accessible Society
for All.

Breaking Down Barriers Independent Living Resource Centre is observing December 3rd, 2012 as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities as proclaimed by the United Nations.

Over one billion people, or approximately 15 per cent of the world’s population, live with some form of disability.  Persons with disabilities, “the world’s largest minority”, often face barriers to participation in all aspects of society.  Barriers can take a variety of forms, including those relating to the physical environment or to information and communications technology, or those resulting from legislation or policy, or from societal attitudes or discrimination.  The result is that persons with disabilities do not have equal access to society or services, including education, employment, health care, transportation, political participation or justice.

“Removing barriers to education, employment, transportation, travel and tourism or sports can create an inclusive and accessible society for all”.

Wasaga Beach Condensation Trails

Contrails form through the injection of water vapor into the atmosphere by exhaust fumes from a jet engine. If the surrounding air is cold enough, a state of saturation is attained and ice crystals develop, producing a contrail.
If the air in which the contrail develops has a low relative humidity, the cloud particles will quickly evaporate. Even in the presence of higher relative humidities, upper-level winds can spread a contrail apart to produce a horizontal sheet-like cloud. For a contrail to remain in tact for a long period of time, the air must have a high relative humidity in the presence of relatively light winds.

Not a Bad Sunset for November 11th

The sky was such a beautiful colour of blue just before sunset. Maybe because World Diabetes Day is coming on Wednesday November 14th. This photo by Joe Bickerstaff at Woodland Beach.

Remembrance Day 2012

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

November 14th - World Diabetes Day

Nov 14 – World Diabetes Day
In recognition of World Diabetes Day, the Beach Boosters Group and its partners want to generate public awareness by once again lighting BLUE a Wasaga Beach Landmark to join the list of international edifices that are involved in this World Wide Event. 2010 marked the first year for Wasaga Beach to take part in WDD with Beach Booster, Wasaga Beach Lions Club and Partners lighting BLUE the Wasaga Dome.  This year we will light BLUE the beautiful Nancy Island Theatre to mark World Diabetes Day 2012.  November was chosen as the day to unite for World Diabetes Day (WDD), as it marks the birthday of Canadian Sir Frederick G. Banting, who along with Dr. Charles Best, are credited with the discovery of insulin in 1921 – Canada’s gift to the world! Don’t forget to share your comments, photos and videos on how you’ll be uniting for WDD here at www.worlddiabetes.ca
