Freelancers at Christmas ….Dilemmas

Home Office Xmas

It’s the holiday season!

At least it is the holiday season for North America and many Western European nations. For a lot of folks the months of November and December are an exciting time. It’s time to get together with family and friends. It’s also a time of celebration.

For a freelancer, however, the holidays can be very stressful. The holiday season presents the average freelancer with a number of confusing dilemmas.

In this post, I’ll address some of those holiday dilemmas directly and explain what a freelancer can do to prepare for them.

Dilemma: Taking Time Off

Like most folks, many freelancers want to take some time off during the holidays. However, without proper planning, getting time off during the holidays can become a major freelancing stressor. Here are two steps you can take to help ensure that you have enough time to spend with your friends and family during the holiday season:

  • Schedule it. Let’s face it, if you don’t put your time off on your calendar just like you would a work project, you probably won’t get to take any. It is just too easy to say “yes” to those last minute projects that tend to crop up at this time of the year.
  • Save for it. Taking time off during the holidays can also cause a financial strain for the unprepared freelancer. As we all know, freelancers don’t get paid unless they work. That’s why it’s important to save for the holidays.
Dilemma: To Gift, or Not to Gift

Most freelancers struggle with the issue of whether or not it is okay to send a gift to their clients. This can be a real dilemma, because the wrong gift can make a bad impression. Or, worse yet, it can seem like a bribe of sorts. There’s also an issue because some folks don’t celebrate the holidays. So, what’s a freelancer to do? Here are two approaches:

  • Promotional items. Promotional business items that are practical, yet not too personal can answer the client gift dilemma quite nicely. Some examples include coffee cups, calendars, or even snacks. Make sure whatever you give is of high quality.
  • Year-end thank-you. Many freelancers opt to make their holiday greetings to clients a year-end thank-you rather than a recognition of a specific holiday. This approach avoids any potential awkwardness and should apply equally to all clients.

Difference between Licence and License

Licence vs License

Most of us often get confused between the terms licence and license. There certainly are some major differences between the two words, right from the usage, convention, and form of expression. Sometimes we use them interchangeably, though it is not recommended.

The first and foremost difference between the words licence and license is the convention. Licence is a UK convention, while license is a US convention. In the UK, licence is used as a noun, and in the UK convention, license becomes the verb. In the US version, license is used to imply both the noun and verb forms.

The following are example sentences to differentiate between the noun and verb form in the UK usage.

This shop is licensed to sell diamonds. Here the word licensed is being used as a verb.

John showed me his driving licence. Here the word licence is used as a noun.

In the US usage, both the sentences will have the same word – license.

As the usage can vary, it might be a bit difficult to remember the correct form of word. So, an easy way to remember whether the word is a noun or verb, is by following the spelling. The alphabet C comes before S, and similarly, N comes before V. So the word licence is a noun, and license is a verb. For better understanding, C denotes noun, and S denotes verb.

Wasaga Dome was Blue for World Diabetes Day

It was a cold blustery wind coming off Georgian Bay last night as Joe Bickerstaff of beachbooster.com and Lion Bill Frieday along with Chris Sarabura of Reflective Solutions managed to turn the Wasaga Dome Blue in Wasaga Beach. All bundled was Kelly Hannigan, “The Music Guy” lending us his expertise.  With the help of Wasaga Beach Lions Club and others the Wasaga Dome was lit up all evening and many, many people dropped by to photograph the event. Members of the Lions club and friends also stopped for hot coffee supplied by Tim Hortons and pizza compliments of Boston Pizza.

The lighting of the Wasaga Dome, like many monuments and buildings in over 60 countries was for World Diabetes Day to promote awareness, education and prevention of diabetes.

The media were especially generous in their support of the local effort with 97.7 the Beach, Wasaga Sun and The Enterprise Bulletin all covering the event.

The photos in this article are courtesy of Susy and Enrique Miranda who braved the cold to capture their photographs.

Others who have taken photos are asked to send their shots to friedayb@gmail.com in order to put together an album for Canadian Diabetes Association and Wasaga Beach Lions Club.

A big thanks to owner Nick Vidinovsky for the use of the Wasaga Dome and to Elvis Pace who looked after us at the Dome.

World Diabetes Day Tomorrow – the first day of our future

WDD-logo-date-EN-2048px

As the world gets ready tomorrow to mark another World Diabetes Day, we would like to share with you a message from the President of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), Professor Jean Claude Mbanya:
"People from all corners of the world will literally bring diabetes to light on 14 November. No matter where you are, it is your efforts that make World Diabetes Day a truly global success.
Tomorrow will be the first day of a future:
- In which we will be able to say 'we acted to stop a global catastrophe in diabetes'.
- With a coordinated global response to diabetes
- Where there will be worldwide access to affordable quality diabetes medicines, technologies and care.
- Which will stop a disease that has been largely preventable and treatable for 90 years.
- In which type 1 diabetes is no longer a death sentence for children in many parts of the world, despite the existence of life-saving insulin.
- Where governments, business, foundations, international organisations, researchers and the scientific community invest significantly in research into the causes, cure and better management of diabetes.
- When the world was forced to face the fact (or the world was forced to acknowledge) that every 8 seconds someone somewhere in the world dies from diabetes – and do something about it.
- Where people with diabetes will be able to exercise their rights to life and health.
But tomorrow will not be a turning point for diabetes without your support. We need to unite, act, and bring diabetes to light. We need to stand together behind IDF's A Call to Action on Diabetes on World Diabetes Day. Then we can be sure that tomorrow will be the first day of a future for people with diabetes worldwide.
We are united for diabetes. We are all in this together."

Watch for the BLUE Wasaga Dome this Sunday, November 14th, World Diabetes Day
The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) global campaign will light iconic monuments and sites worldwide in blue

World Diabetes Day is celebrated every year on 14 November. The date commemorates the birthday of Frederick Banting, who, along with Charles Best, is credited with the discovery of insulin in 1921.
In almost every country of the world, diabetes is on the rise. The current number of people with diabetes stands at over 230 million. The disease is a leading cause of blindness, kidney failure, amputation, heart attack and stroke. It is one of the most significant causes of death, responsible for a similar number of deaths each year as HIV/AIDS.
The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has launched a global campaign to light iconic monuments and sites in blue to mark World Diabetes Day,  November 14th.
In Canada, such places being lighted in Blue are CN Tower, Niagara Falls and Rogers Centre.  In Wasaga Beach, Ontario, Canada IDF has partnered with the Wasaga Dome, on Beach One of the Longest Freshwater Beach in the World to help Bring Diabetes to Light.  Wasaga Dome  is on the list of monuments and buildings around the world of be lit up in Blue. MAP
World Diabetes Day marks a call to action to raise awareness around the world about diabetes, to urge governments to implement national policies for the care and treatment of diabetes and to encourage individuals to get involved.
Wasaga Dome will be Blue lighted from Sundown on Sunday, November 14th until just before midnight.  While no official lighting ceremony will take place it is hope that people from Wasaga Beach and Southern Georgian Bay will witness the beautiful Dome In Blue and take photos from around the bay.
Beach Booster Streetscapes Ltd. searched for a landmark to light here in The Beach, to join the list of global participants. We are delighted to make it happen!
The Wasaga Beach event was made possible through the generosity of Wasaga Dome owner Nick Vidinovski. Volunteering their help are Chris Sarabura of Reflective Solutions who will provide the lighting expertise, Joe Bickerstaff of Beach Booster.com and Bill Frieday will be looking after the total production of the event.

Wasaga Beach …Botulism may be cause of dead birds, fish

Bot

  • Trina Berlo from simcoe.com
  • Nov 09, 2010 - 4:29 PM

WASAGA BEACH – Wasaga Beach Provincial Park is warning people be extra cautious while walking their dogs on the beach because of a possible botulism outbreak.

Park superintendent John Fisher said the collected a number of birds and fish carcasses from beach areas one through six on Oct. 19 and 20.

Fisher said the park was alerted to the issue when staff started getting calls from people reporting a larger than usual number of carcasses washing up on the beach.

"People were noticing, not just dead carcasses on the beach but among the carcasses were a high number of loons," said Fisher.

He counted 27 dead loons, nine Sturgeon - some up to four feet in length - and a number of diving birds such as cormorants and diving birds.

Since then an additional seven loon carcasses were located in the same area and an additional three loons were reported dead at Allenwood Beach.

Officials have sent a fresh loon carcass to the University of Guelph for testing.

Fisher said the Ministry of Natural Resources, who controls the park, is looking to clearly rule out the botulism hasn't developed post mortem.

An MNR fisheries technician came to investigate. Fisher said he was particularly focused on the Sturgeon, which is considered a threatened species.

According to the MNR, the death of large numbers of fish and wildlife on the Great Lakes is not uncommon at certain times of year.

One cause could be Type E botulism, a toxin produced by a naturally occurring bacterium that lives in lake bottom sediment as harmless spores.

"Little is known about the ecology of the bacterium," says the MNR, "but under certain conditions - a rich nutrient source, such as a dead animal, a complete lack of oxygen and an optimum temperature - the bacterium begins producing the toxin and the toxin enters the aquatic food chain, affecting fish and birds that eat fish or molluscs (an invertebrate of a large phylum that includes snails, slugs and mussels)."

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care describes botulism as a rare but serious paralytic illness caused by a nerve toxin produced by the bacterium clostridium botulinum.

The paralysis may result in water birds not being able to hold their head up and as a result, often drown.

Fisher said there has never been a botulism outbreak on Georgian Bay, however "small-scale die-offs" caused by botulism occur annually around the Great Lakes. The largest die-off occurred in Lake Ontario in 2007.

Fisher said even though it is not allowed, people do walk their dogs on the beach and he is warning people to take extra caution and not allow their pets near any carcasses.

The MNR says if pets eat the raw flesh contaminated by botulism it could make them ill and could cause death.

Health Canada advises people can eat fish and waterfowl from the lake because proper cooking and handling eliminates the botulism toxin. People should be cautious not to catch and eat fish and waterfowl that doesn't look healthy and follow good sanitary practices when preparing the food.

Officials say the water itself is safe for swimming. Botulism is only contracted by ingesting contaminated flesh.

Fisher said normally the park would not remove carcasses from the beach but because he was getting a number of calls and wanted to get an accurate count, he did a one-time clean up and buried the carcasses near the park office at Beach Area Three.

Safe disposal

People are responsible for disposing of dead birds on their property by burying them or putting them in the garbage.

People should wear gloves and dispose of them with the carcass, then wash their hands with soap and disinfect any tools that may have come in contact with the carcass.
